About

Down Under is home to some of the country's best-loved yoga teachers. Offering all the major styles of yoga, meditation, fitness and Ayurveda with classes from dawn to dusk, the school offers practice in person across five studio, livestream and on-demand.

Programming

The only independent school in America with a Teacher Leadership Council and faculty-written employment agreement, employment benefits for all teachers, individual faculty meetings and a management team consciously crafted from lead teachers. In a pandemic that saw most yoga teachers fired or furloughed, Down Under refused to lay off a single of its 70 teachers and 15 managers, pivoting overnight to virtual offerings and recruiting students from Europe, Asia and beyond.

Iyengar Yoga: intelligent inquiry

  • Students focus on precise alignment and explore one pose at a time in this classical methodology that employs props to make poses accessible. Three levels of class, plus back care, ropes and pranayama.

Ashtanga Yoga: devoted to ritual

  • Students engage with a set sequence designed to cleanse and purify the body by creating internal heat. Instead of guiding class, Mysore teachers give one-on-one instruction, adding new poses to gain stamina, flexibility and focus.

Vinyasa Yoga: rhythm of body & breath

  • Students flow from one pose to another in a creative and dynamic sequence crafted with a unique focus.

Hot Power Yoga: ablaze with tempo

  • Students are challenged in a sweaty, powerful sequence in 90+ degree heat and humidity. The heat makes muscles pliable, augments range of motion and brings a layer of vigor that compels focus on breath.

Restorative Yoga: sanctuary

  • Students luxuriate in the potency of slowing down, discovering a slower pace that prioritizes purpose over pace and feeling over accomplishment. Tension unwinds in sublime restorative poses and the stillness of meditation.

Racial Justice: ascension

  • Led by Down Under's BIPOC Faculty Director and Faculty Collaborators, racial justice work unfolds in the monthly Accomplice Circle, Yoga in Spanish, and VivaOM programming. Ascension dialogues around wholeness, race and collective possibility, BIPOC training scholarships and training curriculum focused on evolution of the industry.

Prenatal & Kids: the family school

  • Empowering families with the tools of prenatal yoga, baby & me, kids & teens and trainings for teachers & parents.

Ayurveda: yoga's sister science

  • Students explore the secret's of India's ancient medical science through consultations, cleanses, cooking, trainings, diet and lifestyle consultations.

Fitness: it's go time

  • A doctor's complete fitness regime with dynamic personal trainers in HIIT, Strength & Conditioning, Barre, Pilates, Core and Yogasculpt.
